A little over a year ago America Magazine ( which I have read faithfully for over 40 years) did a impressive review of a writer whose works were unknown to me even though I have over 3000 books in my house. Through the feature article in America (a Jesuit publication) I was introduced to Alan Jacobs. My delight in reading has a significant range of interests but my primary delight is the dialogue of religion/theology and literature. The review of Jacobs' book, How To Think prompted me to dash to my computer to yet another Amazon order. I loved that book and ordered another, The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction, and then another and another! What Became of Wystan?Change and Continuity in Auden's Poetry is my 8th Jacobs read none of which would make it for resale as they are all richly underlined with notes in margins (I converse with books as I read). Of course compulsive readers "chase" footnotes so back to Amazon to order suggested reading by Jacobs. I am grateful that Amazon never fails to disappoint my pursuit.. So do I like the Auden book? Yes, OF COURSE, but now I have to read (re-read) lots of Auden but now with greater pleasure and appreciation. And, I deeply appreciate the acknowledgements Jacobs offers to those who helped make each book possible, his wife and son most especially. YOU TOO CAN STRIKE GOLD! Mary Ann Fischer
