As a tribute anthology, Climbing Lightly Through Forests gathers multiple conversations: the poets are responding to Ursula K. Le Guin, her work, or their own responses to her or her work; and as editors, Lemberg and Bradley put the poets in conversation with each other and with the readers. This anthology is enriched by the work of poets from all over the world: Greece, Uruguay, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Chile, the UK, Australia, and Canada, in addition to the United States.
Ursula K. Le Guin was one of my favorite writers. I was drawn to her science fiction first, then to her books about writing, and then, much later, to her poetry. I wish I had discovered her poems earlier. Many of them are meditations on the natural world, the perfect companions for hikes in the mountains or quiet afternoons spent sitting beside ponds. This tribute anthology includes poems that will surely become companions for my outdoor adventures. And it offers more: poems about struggling with illness, loneliness, and the process of aging; poems that expand on science fiction themes or consider those themes in new ways; poems that will speak to social and environmental justice activists; poems for those of us who lost someone who felt like a friend when Le Guin died. Finally, the book includes an in-depth essay that places all of Le Guin's poetry in context and shows how it changed over time as the world and the writer changed.
