Violet doesn’t need to read between the lines: her grandma wants Violet back home and working in her magical store, Charming Books. It’s where the perfect book tends to fly off the shelf and pick you...Violet has every intention to hightail it back to Chicago, but then a dead man is discovered clutching a volume of Emily Dickinson’s poems from Grandma Daisy’s shop. The victim is Benedict Raisin, who recently put Grandma Daisy in his will, making her a prime suspect. Now, with the help of a tuxedo cat named Emerson, Violet will have to find a killer to keep Grandma from getting booked for good...
Crime and Poetry (A Magical Bookshop Mystery)Amanda Flower, author of the Amish Quilt Shop Mysteries and the Appleseed Creek Mysteries, has once again worked her magic to create a new series: The Magical Bookshop Mysteries! In her latest novel, Crime and poetry, Flower has added a cast of unique, but memorable characters and built up momentum that carries its way all throughout the book. The book is set in the charming village of Cascade Springs, right along the mighty Niagara Falls. This quant village is the back drop against a magical book shop that is inherited (albeit grindingly) by the main protagonist, Violet Waverly. She is tricked by her grandmother, Daisy into coming home after a false health scare. What starts as an unhappy family reunion quickly becomes a murder mystery for the main characters!Woven throughout this mystery is a backstory of Violet, who escaped a traumatic event (the death of her friend, whom Violet was blamed for) in Cascade Springs some years ago. What sets this apart from other mysteries is the fact that the book store that her grandmother runs is a magical bookshop that has been in the family for generations. Violet must solve the mystery of the murder of her grandmother’s boyfriend while also deciding if she wants to return to the life she left. Books in this magic book shop, called Charming Books, are able to ‘speak’ to the custodians. A novel idea is used by Flower in order to solve the crime: A copy of Emily Dickenson’s poetry is used by Violet all throughout the story in order to piece together the clues.Flower successfully builds up page-turning elements by her style of writing. She keeps the reader guessing until the very end who the actual suspect is. Overall this is a refreshing read, and a great start from Amanda Flower. I would highly recommend it if you have read any of her previous works, or want a different spin on the cozy mystery!
