Haitink's Shostakovitch 15 takes a different and better tack than most other interpretations. Tempi are often slower, with more clearly defined rhythm structure. If you love this music, you need to hear this peformance. If the music is of little appeal but you're a committed audiophile, buy this disc anyway. With wonderful definition, imaging and soundstaging, it is very probably the greatest classical music recording of all time. Also, if your system is up to it, you'll find yourself treated occasionally to the sound of the London Underground, as a subway train runs directly under the recording venue every few minutes. This last has always been on the recording, but the monitors of the time were incapable of reproducing it, so the engineers and producers never knew that it was there!
