Finalist for the 2017 National Book Award for PoetryThe poems in The Book of Endings try to make sense of, or at least come to some kind of reckoning with absence - the death of the author's mother, the absence of the beloved, the absence of an accountable god, cicadas, the dead stars arriving, the dead moon aglow in the night sky.
I freely admit that I am not well-learned in poetry. I am however, a psychologist, a psychotherapist -- and I am deeply touched by the way the poems in The Book of Endings do so much more than describe or catalog the deeply important work of grief. The poems, individually and as a collective, engage and challenge and speak for and with the place in us that knows (and too often resists) that we will need to find our way through the inevitable loss of a parent. While I don't know enough about poetry to say why the rhythm and words and structure of these poems hit their mark, I can say I will be reading an re-reading these, and I've already recommended them to people about whom I care deeply, for the perspective and stirring and company in loss.
